Welcome to Bell Avenue School, Home of the Tigers!
Bell Avenue School has an outstanding staff of classroom teachers, instructional assistants and support staff who are well-trained and dedicated to their profession. We are committed to excellence in our students’ education and social development as citizens.
Our school has a variety of activities to build school spirit as well as academic accomplishments. Some of our traditional activities include: assemblies for music, art and dramatics; an art club, student council and Tiger Teammates. We have a variety of spirit days and celebrations planned by both our student council and our Bell Avenue Parent Group. Our students have an opportunity to attend a variety of field trips including the 5th grade Starbase experience and the 6th grade five day/four night outdoor educational experience in the Mendocino Woodlands.
Our district has fully implemented the newly adopted Common Core Standards. The new standards call for much more “eyes on text” time, more complex text in both fictional and informational text, and a much greater focus on fluid writing which asks students to critically analyze literature and support their claims with evidence. In mathematics, students will be asked to not just generate answers, but to explain their thinking process. They will have to attend to precision, and speak with the language of mathematics. Yes, this is a big shift. However, it is a shift toward real-world skills and applications that our kids need to be competitive in our fast changing world. We need problem solvers and kids who can persevere in pushing through hard problems. The best thing you can do to support your children all year long is provide them with structured study time and challenging/engaging recreational reading material. Many parents have asked what the new Common Core aligned standardized test will look like that will replace the old STAR exam. All of the Robla School District will participate in a trial run of the new online Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium test (SBAC). 3rd through 6th grader students will take interactive exams in both English Language Arts and Mathematics during late April and early May. As a school site we are aiming to have all tested students familiar with a computer keyboard to be comfortable taking the test. Additionally, once every mid trimester and then again at the end of the trimester, students take benchmark exams in class that have questions modeled to reflect the type of questions that will be on the SBAC. This year will serve as a practice year only, as the state vets the questions and calibrates the validity of the test. The 2014-15 school year will be the first “scored year” under the new exam. More detailed information will be forthcoming on how the test will differ from the old STAR exam, and sample questions will be linked to our website to preview.
Please call if you have any questions about our school programs. Our office is open to you; our goal is to establish and maintain strong, positive relationships with our families. We’d like you to become a volunteer parent and participate regularly in our school; your help is valued by our students and staff.
